DHL FREIGHT'S NEW FREIGHT TRAIN BETWEEN DENMARK AND GERMANY SAVES UP TO 11,500 TONS OF CO2E PER YEAR

May 10, 2023

The 100% electric and dedicated DHL train has three weekly round trips between Duisburg in Germany and Padborg in Denmark. By taking up to 240 trucks a week off the roads, we save the climate and our customers for up to 11,500 tons of CO2 per year – equivalent to 1.05 tons of CO2 per truck.

The solution is another milestone in moving part of our freight business from road to rail. In this case, it benefits the busy roads between Denmark and Benelux, France and the western part of Germany.

The result is both smoother logistics, less emissions and increased reliability in terms of passability. In addition, our customers will be less vulnerable to the increasing road taxes. For example, the German government is currently planning a doubling of road tolls (Maut) by 01.01.2024, which will make the rail tracks between Padborg and Duisburg even more attractive.

The new intermodal solution of course also includes a door-to-door solution with pick-up and delivery. This  even without any significant reductions in lead times.

The rail connection will relieve traffic on the roads significantly thanks to the increased use of the rail network. And since transport by rail represents a substantially lower environmental impact, each trailer transported by the electric train will also lead to significant CO2 savings. In combination with our 'GoGreen Plus' service on the pick-up and deliveries, our customers therefore get a unique opportunity to achieve reductions in their overall CO2 footprint.
