THE ETS AND WHAT IT MEANS TO ROAD TRANSPORTS INVOLVING A FERRY CONNECTION
October 31, 2023
As we informed back in October, the new EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) will be effective from 1 January 2024 on ferry routes within the EU/EEA. The ETS will be introduced in three phases, with the first phase meaning that 40% of reported emissions must be offset through the purchase of emission allowances – which will be increased to 70% in 2025 and 100% in 2026.
Based on the information we have received from the shipping companies, we find it necessary to introduce an ETS Surcharge on all affected countries and routes. This new surcharge will be adjusted on a monthly basis – starting on 1 January 2024 – depending on the costs of purchasing CO2 allowances. The adjusted surcharges will be published each month on dhl.dk
If you have any questions about the above and what it means for your transports, you are always welcome to reach out to your usual contact person at DHL Freight.
You can download a matrix with our new ETS Surcharge here (under ‘Other Surcharges’).
