Beyond the basket: What do today’s online shoppers want?

The buying habits of online shoppers are constantly changing. Just in time for peak season, we’re sharing insights into the three distinct online shopper personas we’ve identified. Retailers who want to stay relevant won’t want to miss this.

The who, what, where, how, and why of online shoppers today

Any retailer will tell you it’s super important to know your customers. Who is buying what? Where and how are consumers shopping? Why do they click the buy button (or abandon their shopping cart!)? Understanding online shoppers’ habits, frustrations, and expectations is paramount.

But how do you get the answers?

It’s not easy in an international online marketplace that is highly competitive and rapidly changing. Our latest Global Online Shopper Survey has identified three distinct online shopper types. Let’s meet and get to know them – and find out what influences their buying decisions.

Social, sustainable, international

For the past few years, our experts at DHL eCommerce have been surveying online shoppers across 20+ countries worldwide to learn what makes them click. The 2024 survey shows that most online shoppers fall under three categories – three different “faces” that can tell us a lot – and have quite a bit in common.

Social Media Shoppers

These dynamic shoppers like to shop via social platforms and value personalized experiences and exclusive access to new products.

Sustainable Shoppers

This environmentally conscious group wants high-quality, low-emissions products and values lots of choice and info to make informed decisions.

Cross-border Shoppers

These adventurous shoppers are willing to look abroad for deals and unique products but still value convenient and flexible delivery and returns.

Let’s dive a little deeper:

Shopping via Social Media

Social media shoppers
This dynamic, tech-savvy group likes a seamless shopping experience through platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Most social media shoppers are Gen Z & and Millennials who buy online frequently, often through subscriptions, with fashion, electronics, and beauty products at the top of their wish lists. They value personalized experiences, exclusive deals and discounts, stellar customer service, and sustainability. Delivery options and speed can significantly influence their decisions.

Environmentally friendly packaging material

Sustainable shoppers
These environmentally conscious consumers, mostly under 45 and from Europe and Asia Pacific, care about how their purchases impact the planet. Over 90% of Gen Z and Millennials factor sustainability into purchasing decisions. With 31% shopping several times a week, they look for high-quality product images and detailed product information to make informed decisions and expect businesses to offer sustainable delivery options as standard. Nearly half are willing to accept longer shipping times if it means lowering their environmental impact.

Cross-Border Shopping

Cross-border shoppers
This adventurous group of consumers are global explorers seeking unique finds and better prices from international retailers. Cross-border shoppers are also mainly under 45 and from Europe and Asia Pacific, with 75% shopping abroad at least once a month. They favor products like clothing, electronics, and cosmetics, too. These shoppers are highly cost-conscious, with many looking across borders for a larger selection and lower prices. Delivery costs and reliability are also top priorities, with many abandoning their shopping carts if shipping fees are too high.
