What do French fries, chocolate, and container ships have in common? They are all part of a sweet partnership with Swiss chocolate maker Lindt & Sprüngli to reduce maritime emissions using sustainable marine fuels.

A partnership with purpose

DHL Global Forwarding and Lindt & Sprüngli have teamed up to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in ocean freight and tackle their shared goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Using DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, Lindt & Sprüngli will reduce its transportation carbon footprint by around 4,800 metric tons by the end of 2024.

A sustainable approach to global logistics

We handle the logistics of Lindt & Sprüngli’s chocolate products from Europe to destinations worldwide, including the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Japan, Brazil, and South Africa. With GoGreen Plus, we offer the option to reduce carbon emissions directly in the value chain by using sustainable marine and aviation fuels.

Sustainable fuels made from waste and residues reduce GHG emissions by an average of 80% at the source, compared to conventional maritime fuel. Using a book and claim system, we can allocate environmental benefits via certificates to our customers to show that they paid for the biofuels and can claim the emissions reductions, even when their shipments are not physically transported by vessels using these fuels.

The bonus: By giving any customer who wants it access to sustainable fuels, we help drive up demand and production of these much-needed fuels.

Setting our sights on a sustainable supply chain

Both DHL and Lindt & Sprüngli have committed to science-based targets confirmed by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and are working towards net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Using our GoGreen Plus service to inject sustainable marine fuels into the supply chain helps both companies move closer to these targets – and our customer gets an end-to-end solution that ensures the supply chain remains seamless while lowering emissions.
