DHL EXPRESS RENEWS CONTRACT FOR TOKYO DISTRIBUTION CENTER TO MEET MARKET GROWTH DEMAND
Press Release: Tokyo, Japan, April 19, 2022
The distribution center will be installed with renewable energy features as part of its efforts to achieve carbon neutrality
DHL Express, the world’s leading international express service provider, has renewed the contract with GLP Japan Inc. to operate the Tokyo Distribution Centre, built and managed by GLP Japan. The new contract, worth EUR88 million (JYP 12 billion), is for a period of 20 years until 2042. In addition, DHL will be installing new renewable energy features as part of its commitment to sustainability.
Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan said, "It is no exaggeration to say that DHL's business in Japan market has grown hand in hand with the Tokyo Distribution Centre, and we are pleased to renew the contract with our longstanding and trusted partner, GLP Japan. This contract renewal further strengthens our initiatives in Japan to combat with climate changes and is nothing short of our strong commitment to the post-corona growth of Japan market".
With the contract renewal, DHL Japan is taking a major step towards improving the facility’s carbon footprint in line with the Deutsche Post DHL Group's Mission 2050, which is to reduce logistics-related carbon dioxide emissions to net zero by 2050. With the installation of 468.63 kW photovoltaic panels across approximately 4,000 square meters on the roof of the facility, approximately 20% of the facility's total electricity consumption will be from renewable energy sources. In addition to using LEDs for various lighting fixtures, IoT-based energy management system will also be implemented to ensure the balance between solar power generation and power consumption 24 hours a day in order to optimize the reduction of power consumption.
The Tokyo Distribution Centre started its operation in 2002 as DHL's largest logistics base in Asia Pacific region, and subsequently became DHL Express's core facility in the Eastern Japan district. It continued to serve as the sorting base for all shipments to and from Narita International Airport, until the new Tokyo Gateway inaugurates in 2016. Since 2016, it has also served as the Tokyo Central Service Center, DHL's largest collection and delivery base in Japan.
Deutsche Post DHL Group's de-carbonization roadmap to realize Mission 2050 includes investing €7 billion by 2030 to electrify 60% of its last-mile delivery fleet, carbon neutralization of new facilities, 30% sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in the aviation and the enhancement of green products. In Japan, we are also accelerating the shift to electric vehicles, including the recent introduction of electric trucks in March 2022.
