Press Release: Tokyo, February 28, 2025
- DHL Express and eBay signed an agreement for "DHL GoGreen Plus" to accelerate eBay’s decarbonization efforts
- eBay will leverage DHL's service to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping
DHL Express Japan, the world’s leading international express service provider and eBay Inc., a leading e-Commerce marketplace (San Jose, USA ), have signed a GoGreen Plus agreement effective January 2025. This is an express shipping service to reduces (‘inset’) the greenhouse gas emissions of international express shipments through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Orange Connect (OC), one of eBay's official logistics service providers, purchased almost 500 metric tons of SAF credits on behalf of eBay. This partnership will support one of eBay’s official logistics services based in Japan, called "eBay SpeedPAK – Ship via DHL".
Mr. Kang Zhang, General Manager, Global Managed Shipping & Logistics of eBay Inc. said, “We are proud of our partnership with DHL and excited about Japan SpeedPAK’s participation in the Go Green Plus program. This signifies eBay’s commitment to decarbonize and reach our long-term reduction goals.”
eBay’s Efforts and the Industry’s Environmental Awareness
With this agreement, eBay is utilizing SAF in “eBay SpeedPAK – Ship via DHL,” enabled by “DHL GoGreen Plus,” to reduce its Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions. eBay’s move towards decarbonization demonstrates the growing environmental awareness within the cross-border e-commerce sector in Japan. It supports eBay’s goal to reduce transportation-related emissions 27.5% by 2030 from a 2019 baseline
Ms. Renee Morin, Chief Sustainability Officer said, “Creating a more sustainable future has been part of eBay's DNA for over 25 years. Shipping decarbonization is key to our goals, as well as combating the global climate emergency. We are excited to partner with DHL on their GoGreen Plus Program and look forward to expanding our work to drive decarbonization across our value chain."
Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan said, “DHL GoGreen Plus provides an effective means for companies aiming to promote more sustainable logistics and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It also responds to the growing demand from companies that prioritize environmental responsibility. We are delighted that eBay sees the value of our GoGreen Plus service to help decarbonize its downstream transportation emissions footprint.”
DHL’s Decarbonization Initiatives
DHL Express is committed to its mission, which is to achieve net-zero logistics-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In addition to promoting the electrification of pick-up and delivery vehicles worldwide, the use of SAF in air transportation, and carbon-neutrally designed facilities, DHL Express introduced GoGreen Plus in 2023, which is the industry’s first international shipping service that enables customers to reduce their Scope 3 GHG emissions footprint using SAF. In Japan, more than 6,000 customers have onboarded the GoGreen Plus service.
DHL Express has signed some of the industry's largest-scale contracts to procure SAF. This includes the agreement with bp and Neste in 2022, and with World Energy in 2023. In January 2025, DHL Express signed the contract with Cosmo Oil Marketing Co., Ltd. in Japan, which also signifies the company’s first SAF procurement in Asia. With this deal, the company will start using the locally produced SAF for its regular cargo shipping services starting in April 2025. This is also the first such initiative for the international express industry in Asia.
