DHL EXPRESS LAUNCHES GOGREEN PLUS, A CUSTOMER-ENGAGED SUSTAINABLE SERVICE IN KOREA

Press Release: Seoul, June 19, 2023

  • Offers customers a chance to reduce carbon emissions for their shipments through the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
  • Also provides the service through annual contracts and different service rates depending on the target set by customers

DHL Express, the world’s leading international express services provider, has announced the launch of GoGreen Plus in Korea, a new service that can reduce (“inset”) the carbon emissions associated with shipments by using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

A first among global express couriers, GoGreen Plus is a customer-engaged sustainable service where customers can opt to use SAF. Following the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) philosophy , GoGreen Plus allows customers to reduce their Scope 3 emissions, the indirect greenhouse gas emissions in a company's value chain, including downstream transportation and distribution.

ByungKoo Han, Country Manager of DHL Express, said, “I’m very pleased that we can join the carbon emission reduction efforts in the shipment process along with customers. DHL will stay committed to sustainable growth to support future generations and will strive to fulfill our responsibilities for the environment.”

Produced from feedstock collected from multiple sources (e.g., used cooking oils and municipal waste), SAF is blended with traditional jet fuel at the airports and fuelled into planes. With this, SAF can provide carbon emission reductions of up to 80% over its lifecycle from production to use compared with the conventional jet fuel it replaces.

Anyone can select the GoGreen Plus service when choosing their shipping service through MyDHL+, DHL’s online shipping and tracking platform. GoGreen Plus can be added to shipments simply by ticking the box marked GoGreen Plus under Optional Services when booking, and the shipment will be delivered to its destination with GOGREEN PLUS logo attached to the waybill. This proves that the shipment had emitted less carbon dioxide during its journey.

Customers can also apply GoGreen Plus by signing an annual contract. In this case, they can tailor the CO2e reduction they want to achieve, such as 10%, 20%, or 30%, and service rates will be calculated based on the annual usage of DHL service in the previous year and the reduction target set by them. For customers who use GoGreen Plus service through an annual contract, DHL annually provides a report of the amount of reduced carbon emissions and carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions as well as a certification issued by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS).

The GoGreen Plus service is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group's sustainability goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. It contributes to the interim target of using 30 percent SAF for all air transport by 2030. In line with its Sustainability Roadmap, Deutsche Post DHL Group aims to offer a green alternative for all products and services across all divisions.

DHL Express Korea has also led green transportation efforts by introducing electric vehicles since 2018. It plans to fully replace its fuel-powered vehicles with electric vehicles by 2030, reducing approximately 1,400 tons of carbon emissions annually.
