DHL Express Korea Helps Beauty & Lifestyle Platform CJ Olive Young Reduce Carbon Emissions Through Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Press Release: Seoul, South Korea, July 22, 2024
- CJ Olive Young has signed up for DHL’s GoGreen Plus service as a show of its commitment to combat climate change within its own value chain
- The partnership highlights both companies’ dedication to reducing carbon emissions and implementing sustainability measures
DHL Express, the world’s leading international express service provider, is supporting CJ Olive Young, a leading beauty & lifestyle platform in Korea, to reduce carbon emissions through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) via the DHL GoGreen Plus service.
The GoGreen Plus service is part of DHL Group's sustainability goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The service empowers customers to reduce their Scope 3 emissions - the indirect greenhouse gas emissions inherent within a company's value chain, predominantly in up- and downstream transportation and distribution, using SAF. Made from renewable energy, sustainable biomass or waste, SAF can provide carbon emission reductions of around 80% over its lifecycle from production to use compared with the conventional jet fuel it replaces.
With the partnership, CJ Olive Young can ship all international express packages to its customers through DHL’s GoGreen Plus Service, empowering both companies to lead carbon emission reduction using the sustainable transportation method. The service enables CJ Olive Young to determine the amount of CO₂e they aim to reduce based on their sustainability goal. The company will receive an annual report of the amount of reduced carbon emissions they achieved in the previous year as well as a certification issued by Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), which can be utilized for carbon reporting.
CJ Olive Young has a resource recycling system and other consumer awareness enhancement activities as part of its sustainability management efforts. One representative campaign is ‘Beauty Cycle,’ which aims to increase recycling rates by repursposing used plastic containers into new resources. CJ Olive Young’s signing up of DHL’s GoGreen Plus Service shows its ongoing effort to create a clean beauty ecosystem and take sustainable measures to reduce carbon emissions.
Jihun (Michael) Han, Managing Director of DHL Express Korea, said, “We are pleased to take a major step in the right direction towards environmental protection and a sustainable future through our partnership with CJ Olive Young. We hope this significant stride will inspire more beauty and retail brands to also reduce their carbon emissions through SAF and join us in our sustainability journey to benefit future generations.”
Through GoGreen Plus, customers can opt to use SAF to reduce carbon emissions during transportation. Currently, more than 40,000 customers have signed up for the service in the Asia Pacific region (except for China). Launched in Korea in June 2003, over 3,300 customers in the country are using the service.
DHL has contracted up to 800 million liters of SAF from bp and Neste by 2026. Additionally, DHL and World Energy, a leading SAF producer and low-carbon solutions provider, signed a long-term agreement on purchasing up to 668 million liters of SAF by 2030 via sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc). The agreements will contribute to achieving DHL’s interim target of using at least 30% of SAF blending for all air transport by 2030.
