Launched in February this year, GoGreen Plus allows customers to effectively mitigate the environmental footprint of their supply chains through carbon insetting. The amount of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) chosen is then blended with conventional jet fuel to lower the release of CO2e and other greenhouse gases. SAF is currently the only scalable measure for the next years to come, given its unparalleled capacity for long-range flights.
"Our mission at Ecolex Sdn. Bhd. is to provide global high-quality and safe food ingredients and animal nutrition products while manufacturing them in a socially and environmentally responsible manner," said Jouni Asikainen, Chief Executive Officer at Ecolex Sdn. Bhd. "We are not just committed to our own sustainability but also to working with our business partners, including raw material and equipment suppliers, service providers, and industry alliances to collectively make a positive impact on our planet."
The agreement follows Ecolex’s efforts to improve its carbon footprint. Initiatives such as the installation of solar energy panels, usage of boiler economizers to minimize energy consumption, implementation of 3R practices company-wide, and ISO 14001 certification demonstrate the company’s strong sustainability position.
“It is heartening to see Ecolex take the initiative among local agribusinesses to address carbon footprint reduction and we are proud to support them with this transition,” said Julian Neo, Managing Director of DHL Express Malaysia and Brunei. “Companies that choose to employ SAF in their supply chains have the power to catalyze the scale of this technology and accelerate more widespread adoption. We will continue to leverage on GoGreen Plus to facilitate the net-zero ambitions of our customers.”
GoGreen Plus is made possible following two of the largest SAF deals with bp and Neste in 2022 to supply over 800 million liters to the DHL Express network. It is expected that the strategic collaborations will save approximately two million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over the aviation fuel lifecycle—equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 400,000 passenger cars.
SAF is produced from sustainably-sourced renewable waste and residue raw materials. In neat form and over the lifecycle, it significantly cuts emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional jet fuel. An independent third-party agency, Société Générale de Surveillance, verifies the reductions, which can be counted towards Scope 3 and Science Based Targets (SBTi).
GoGreen Plus is part of DHL Group's sustainability roadmap for 2030 and contributes to the interim target of having at least 30 percent of fuel requirements covered by sustainable fuels.
