DHL SUPPLY CHAIN TO DELIVER 10 000 THOUSAND OF EMPIK BOOKS TO LIBRARIES IN THE 1,000 GOOD REASONS TO READ CAMPAIGN

Press Release: Warsaw, 22 February 2021

Thousands of new books from Empik are going to 10 schools throughout Poland. On 22 and 23 February an Empik truck, full to the brim, will deliver new books to Zabraniec, Okuniew, and Mińsk Mazowiecki. And these are only the first stops along the way during the final of the 5th edition of Empik’s 1,000 Good Reasons to Read campaign. In a week, the truck w 1ill visit 10 places, where Mr Book and Ms Dot, Empik brand’s ambassadors, will hand over 10,000 new books, as well as e-book readers, to the winning primary schools.

“It is already the fifth time that EMPIK, with the great pleasure and satisfaction, has donated books to young winners, while for DHL Supply Chain it is the first time it has provided logistic support to the project. For years, the 1,000 Good Reasons to Read campaign has been showing young people that every book they read is yet another wonderful adventure and a chance to meet fantastic characters they may remember forever. And the school library is a place where every child will always receive a warm welcome and find a treasury of countless new and inspiring stories. Children can tell each other about interesting books, go through their favourite parts together and talk about characters and plots. And they can also rummage together between the shelves during breaks. As we see the commitment of school kids and their parents, grandparents and neighbours, we have no doubt that a library is also a place that can unite people for a shared cause and inspire them to act. A visit from Mr Book and Ms Dot is a special occasion for the whole local community and a celebration of their joint effort.”
Justyna Chmielewska, Project Manager for Children’s Readership (Empik)

DHL is the logistic partner of the campaign. The DHL Supply Chain truck is equipped with TRAILAR, an innovative solar technology. The system generates electricity from sunlight and thus reduces both fuel consumption and the amount of CO2 emitted by each vehicle by 4.5 tonnes a year.

“It is a great honour and pleasure to take part in a project that supports children’s readership in Poland. We are happy that we can support Empik in this noble campaign by delivering books to libraries that are the winners of the contest”, says Andries Retief, CEO DHL Supply Chain for Central and East Europe.

Triumphant tour around Poland

More than 550 primary schools joined the 5th edition of the “1000 Good Reason to Read” contest. That number is similar to the previous year despite the unprecedented pandemic situation. In order to ensure equal chances for all, the primary schools were divided into two categories: up to 120 children and more than 120 children. Ten winners were selected in the contest, five in each category. This year, the highest level of commitment was demonstrated by schools from Kraków, Leszno, Mińsk Mazowiecki, Myszków, Niepołomice, Okuniew, Serokomla, Trzeboś, Zabraniec, and Zielona Góra. In addition to the 10,000 books, the winners also receive e-book readers and codes for a selected subscription option in the Empik Go application for pupils, teachers and parents.

The contest is supported by subscribers to the Empik Premium and Empik Premium Free programmes. Every purchase made in Empik stores and on Empik.com brings a contribution to the 1,000 Good Reasons to Read campaign, which makes it possible to supply school libraries with thousands of new stories. The contest is organised under the honorary patronage of the Polish Chamber of Books, the Adam Mickiewicz Museum of Literature, and the Polish Librarians’ Association.
