DHL Express Supports Vietinbank With Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Through GoGreen Plus Service

Press Release: Hanoi, Vietnam, 7 November 2024

DHL Express supports VietinBank with greenhouse gas emissions reduction through GoGreen Plus

VietinBank has successfully reduced 26.66 tons of CO2e from January to September 2024  through DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, which uses sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to lower greenhouse gas emissions for its time-definite international (TDI) shipments

DHL Express is marking a significant milestone with VietinBank in the bank’s goal of reducing carbon emissions for their international express shipments. By using DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, VietinBank has successfully reduced 26.66 tons of CO2e from January to September 2024 through the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). VietinBank’s achievement is recognized at a certification presentation by DHL, as the leading bank in Vietnam for its carbon reduction efforts among all GoGreen Plus customers in the banking sector. This achievement showcases VietinBank’s proactive approach to minimizing its environmental impact and contributing to a more sustainable future.

Bernardo Bautista, General Director and Country Manager of DHL Express Vietnam, stated, “We understand that being more sustainable is necessary for our planet. We are excited to support VietinBank, which has reduced the most greenhouse gas emissions of their international shipments among all our GoGreen Plus bank customers in Vietnam during the first three quarters of 2024. We are proud that our service can help create a more sustainable logistics landscape, where businesses can thrive while contributing positively to the environment.”

The GoGreen Plus service employs a "carbon insetting" approach, utilizing SAF made from renewable energy, sustainable biomass or waste.Unlike traditional aviation fuel, SAF lowers lifecycle emissions by up to 80%. By focusing on the "carbon insetting" method, businesses can effectively reduce Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect greenhouse gas emissions from their value chain, particularly in transportation and distribution. The GoGreen Plus service has garnered strong support across the Asia Pacific with over 90,000 customers, and more than 9,600 active customers in Vietnam on the service since its launch.

Businesses today are increasingly prioritizing sustainability alongside speed and efficiency. Importantly, the "insetting" method is recognized as an emissions reduction effort under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), focusing on direct greenhouse gas emissions reductions rather than investing in external projects.

VietinBank will undergo an annual certification process, with an independent third-party auditor, Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS), overseeing the evaluation. As part of this partnership, VietinBank will receive monthly carbon footprint report detailing their overall emissions in collaboration with DHL Express.

As part of VietinBank's commitment to environmental responsibility and to building a sustainable future, the bank has invested in the GoGreen Plus initiative, emphasizing its commitment to reducing logistics-related emissions and supporting sustainable community development.

VietinBank’s spokesperson said, “Climate change is no longer a warning. The whole world takes action, and so do we! VietinBank is committed to further implementing corporate social responsibility, spreading sustainable values to bring significant and long-term benefits to customers, partners, shareholders, employees, and community based on care, respect and empathy.”

VietinBank has incorporated ESG elements into its development strategy, consolidating a Sustainable Development Steering Committee to ensure consistent implementation across the organization. The bank has also launched a ‘GREEN UP’ financial package of VND 5 trillion (EUR 184 million) for environmentally and socially beneficial projects. It is also collaborating with MUFG, a leading global financial services group and one of the largest banking institutions in Japan, to mobilize up to USD 1 billion for sustainable development projects in Vietnam.

Collaboration is crucial as more regulations are implemented and consumer expectations are growing around sustainability issues. For instance, major importing markets are imposing high taxes on products with significant carbon footprint. This presents both challenges and opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises aiming for carbon neutrality. The partnership between DHL and VietinBank exemplifies how businesses can leverage alternative logistics solutions that reduces their environmental impact to enhance their competitive advantage in the international market.
