DHL Transformed a Distribution Center for Eaton Into a Carbon Neutral Operation
Press Release: Prague, May 22, 2024
- Warehouse operated for Eaton by logistics provider DHL Supply Chain switches to sustainable technologies
- The developer CTP actively participated in transformation of the warehouse in CTPark Pohořelice
- Advanced heat pump system reduces local CO2 emissions to zero*
- All DHL Supply Chain distribution centers will have a CO2 neutral balance after 2025
DHL Supply Chain has been operating a carbon neutral distribution center for Eaton in CTPark Pohořelice since January 2024. The developer CTP actively participated in its transformation. The contract logistics leader plans a gradual transition to carbon neutrality in all its existing warehouses by end of 2025 as one key lever in their Sustainability Roadmap. After this year, all DHL Supply Chain distribution centers in the Czech Republic will have a neutral balance of CO2 emissions.
“We are excited that in Pohořelice, in close cooperation with our client and the owner of the site, we have managed to implement an ambitious project of replacing the gas heating system with a heat pump system in full operation. We have thus achieved carbon neutrality, a commitment that DHL Supply Chain has made by the end of 2025, and Eaton has targeted for its operations by 2030. The new heating system will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also lower the energy consumption,” says Jan Karban, Regional Operations Director Moravia at DHL Supply Chain.
“Sustainability lies at the heart of our vision at Eaton to improve quality of life and the environment, so I am thrilled we have reached the major milestone of carbon neutral operations at our Pohořelice distribution center,” says Luboš Tomiška, director, Eaton European Innovation Center, EMEA, Eaton. “Our close collaboration with DHL is delivering on decarbonization at this site – creating both environmental and cost benefits for years to come. Through initiatives like smart LED lighting, improved insulation, and the replacement of gas heating with a heat pump system, we are supporting Eaton’s ambitious 2030 sustainability goals, which include halving operational carbon emissions.”
DHL Supply Chain’s consistent focus on sustainability is also evidenced by other measures and activities it implements in its Pohořelice warehouse. Between 2019 and 2023, electricity consumption was reduced by 35%. For example, newly purchased trucks are already equipped with lithium-ion batteries. The possibility of using solar panels is also being considered, which could cover at least part of the electricity consumption of equipment with stable operation, from lighting to conveyors to air conditioning.
“At CTP, we have a long-term focus on sustainability across our projects, so when DHL Supply Chain requested to turn their distribution center in CTPark Pohořelice into a carbon neutral one, we used our experience and prepared a comprehensive plan to achieve the carbon neutrality of the distribution center. In this project, we focused not only on significant modifications of heating and cooling systems, but also included infrastructure for electromobility, supporting the future transition to more environmentally friendly means of transport,” explains Michal Dospěl, Regional Construction Director, CTP Czech Republic.
