In Action 24/7, 365 Days a Year - That's the DHL Hub Leipzig

DHL Hub Leipzig is the heart of a global logistics network. Thousands of tons of freight from around the world are handled here night after night and delivered to the customer. Safe, fast and on time.

A Network That Spans the Globe

DHL Express's airfreight hub in Leipzig has existed since 2008  and has become the largest hub in the DPDHL Group's express network worldwide. Our business is express freight. We transport shipments quickly to destinations and guarantee delivery at a defined time. 220 countries and regions - there is almost no place to which we do not deliver.

For our service we operate a worldwide network for air freight. In addition to the global hubs in Hong Kong (Asia) and Cincinnati (USA), Leipzig is the most modern in the entire DHL Express network. Hundreds of thousands of international shipments are handled here every night.

The Way of the Shipment

Since the core of our business is to deliver shipments to their destination the following day, the cargo has to be handled at hubs at night. Express freight is dependent on the so-called "night jump". Without a 24-hour operation, a hub for express freight cannot be operated.

What happens to a package that the customer sends? How often is it offloaded and reloaded? The overview shows the different stations within the process chain from pick-up to delivery. When a shipment arrives at the DHL Hub in Leipzig, it takes  only two hours on average to be unloaded, re-sorted and loaded back into the aircraft.

The Milestones

It is a Central German success story: Since 2008 the global company DHL has been represented at Leipzig/Halle Airport with the DHL Hub Leipzig. It is the world's largest hub of the group. The past few years have been characterized by constant further development: we are continuously renewing our fleets and in September 2023 we inaugurated the LEJ Campus, a modern, environmentally friendly and multifunctional building complex. More about the milestones in the overview.

"Exclusive Partner" RB Leipzig Women

It's not a game. It's a match!  DHL Group has been the proud "Exclusive Partner" of the RB Leipzig women's team since 2023. We are two international brands with global appeal. It's not just our team spirit that fits together, but also the values we live by together every day. Speed, teamwork and a clear passion for excellence regardless of age, gender or origin are the driving forces that characterise and make both DHL as a company and RB Leipzig successful.

EAT is EASA Approved Training Organization

The status of Approved Training Organization (ATO) for the training of commercial pilots and for training to obtain an instrument rating must be approved by the German Federal Aviation Office. The DHL airline European Air Transport Leipzig at Leipzig/Halle airport achieved certification as an ATO (Approved Training Organization) in 2022, enabling us to offer recurring training and basic training courses for our pilots right here in Leipzig.

Ground breaking ceremony for LEJ Campus

Construction of the LEJ CAMPUS, a multi-storey, multi-functional building complex in the immediate vicinity of the logistics and flight operations, began in in July 2021. In addition to office space, a canteen, training rooms and even a leisure area with a table tennis table, pool table and fitness room were built. The new office complex produces almost three quarters of its electrical energy requirements itself - through photovoltaics, but also through a combined heat and power plant that supplies the campus with heat.   The LEJ Campus was officially opened in September 2023 in the presence of Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer.

Opening of the Aviation Training Center

In order to offer pilots on-site simulator training, the Aviation Training Center was opened in 2020. It houses two flight simulators for the Airbus A300 and Boeing 757 aircraft. Both simulators are exact replicas of these aircraft cockpits. Pilots from all over Europe come to Leipzig in order to complete their required training hours.

We celebrate 10 years DHL Hub Leipzig

It is a Central German success story that is celebrated accordingly: For exactly ten years, the global company DHL has been represented at Leipzig / Halle Airport with its European air freight hub. We celebrate our 10th birthday with all employees and their families and friends in the BELANTIS theme park. In addition, we invited 1,300 citizens from Central Germany to an exclusive festival concert of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Finally, the official anniversary celebration with representatives from business and politics and many friends and partners of the DHL Hub takes place in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, including the prime ministers of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt: Michael Kretschmer and Dr. Reiner Haseloff.

Partnership with the Handball team SC DHfK

With the start of the 2017/18 season, DHL is the new jersey sponsor and gold partner of the SC DHfK handball team. "Both at the SC DHfK and the DHL Hub Leipzig, it is all about the passionate and purposeful team performance, to which we owe our successes. Precision and speed determine the actions of both teams," says Ralph Wondrak, CEO of DHL Hub Leipzig. In particular, we take care of the youth and promote the teams as well as the DHL LE Open tournament.

We take our expansion into operation.

The DHL Hub Leipzig officially commissions the new sorting terminals in the presence of numerous guests. Thanks to the state-of-the-art sorting system, even bulky and heavy shipments can now be handled fully automatically. The investments to expand the European hub have paid off. Our sorting capacity increases to 150,000 shipments per hour. With its unique addition the DHL Hub Leipzig will continue to secure its place as the world's largest and most modern air freight hub, providing a safe workplace for 1,300 new colleagues.

Operating license for our airline

EAT has been carrying out the maintenance of aircraft since 2008 - now the company also receives the official approval as a German airline. The "Airline Operator Certificate" (AOC) represents the last step for the relocation of the European DHL air traffic service from Brussels to Leipzig, which began in November 2007. Eleven Boeing 757 aircraft initially belong to the fleet.

Opening of the DHL Hub Leipzig

It only took about two years to build the world's largest and most modern hub in DHL's express network outside the city of Leipzig. Originally planned for autumn, the commissioning of the hub was brought forward to spring. At the end of May, CEO Frank Appel officially inaugurated the hub. Among the prominent guests at the opening were the former ministers Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Wolfgang Tiefensee and Saxony's former prime minister Dr. Georg Milbradt.
