A Rhinoceros on the Apron
The world's largest hub can do more than just ship packages. From time to time, there are also animals on the planes that arrive safely at their destination via the LEJ HUB.
My mom has been working at the DHL hub in Leipzig for a long time. I used to listen with attention when she told me exciting stories about her work. Probably one of the most exciting stories was about a rhino. In 2016, DHL supported the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust in releasing Eliska, a black rhino, into a protected area in Tanzania. Over the past few years, DHL has supported 20 such international wildlife and conservation initiatives. In addition to Eliska, a tiger, a gorilla and a leopard, for example, have also been transported safely.
Today, I work for DHL myself and have the opportunity to personally ask my colleagues how such animal transports work. I spoke to Steven Rimpl about this. He works as a shift manager in ACS (Air Capacity Sales). He therefore deals with unusual freight on a regular basis.
"Before elephant, tiger and co. board, there are a few things to consider. The first step is always an examination by a veterinarian. The vet checks whether the animal is fit to fly. Before arriving at the hub, there are numerous colleagues on site who have been specially trained to handle live cargo," Steven knows.
That's also important, I learn, because there's a lot to consider. The animals must have enough freedom of movement and must be able to be reached quickly in an emergency. Air circulation must also not be underestimated. "For example, you can't store a mare in front of a stallion or meat in front of predators. Animals get restless with certain smells, such as meat, and move around too much as a result, which disrupts the balance of the plane and the animal's well-being," Steven explained to me. So the health of the animals is always the top priority. Therefore, they are always accompanied by an expert or veterinarian.
Meanwhile I know: A rhino on the apron is of course not on our everyday agenda. One thing my research showed in particular: It´s not just my mom who remembers Eliska's transport fondly, but many colleagues here at the hub. - Sanja Sandner
