SERIES: Our employees are as diverse as their volunteer activities

The Volunteers at Express program gives employees the opportunity to share their own passion projects with others.

"Connecting People and Improving Lives" is an important part of DHL Express' mission statement, and volunteering is an essential part of the Express culture. Volunteers at Express is a project in which colleagues from all over the world who work at DHL Express can make their volunteer work visible to all employees. It doesn't matter whether they help out at charitable organizations, support projects and initiatives or use their passion to help others and pass it on to them. In 2023, 78,866 hours were logged in this way.

Helping hand at the European Football Championships

There are also many dedicated employees at the LEJ Hub - Lea is one of them. She was a volunteer at the European Football Championships 2024 in Leipzig in the Spectator Services department, making her one of the faces of the event: “I was a volunteer at a total of four games here in Leipzig. During my first assignment, I was on site as a contact person for the spectators in the stadium. I then greeted the people and helped them find their place. I was simply present, so that the visitors never had the feeling of being alone.”

She never knew exactly in advance what her tasks were going to be on the respective days, as the areas of operation were always rotating: "That made it particularly exciting. It made me look forward to the games anew every time."

Lea has been working at DHL Express since 2016, when she started her career with an apprenticeship as an office management assistant. After successfully completing her training, she remained in the HR department and is now responsible for various employee retention programs, including, for example, the selection of the employee of the year.

Searching for new challenges

Having worked in this profession for so long, she was looking for new challenges: "I just wanted to experience being part of a new team or learning something new. I saw the opportunity to develop personally through the program."

Her voluntary commitment to the European Football Championship has paid off for Lea completely. She was able to learn to deal with exciting new situations. She also got to know a variety of new people: "I was able to make so many contacts – there was really everything from pensioners to managing directors. That was incredibly fun." It was only then that she really realized how much football connects. So if she ever had the chance to participate in something similar again, she would definitely do it.
