Supply chains play a vital role in the journey towards sustainability: a change that is pivotal for humanity, our planet, and businesses.

We brought decision makers, thought leaders and industry stakeholders together to focus on the development of cleaner, greener logistics.

This collaborative response to the challenges of climate change is poised to usher in a fresh era centered around sustainable logistics. Through collective efforts with industry-leading experts and a commitment to ongoing innovation, we can address the challenges of the current climate emergency and create and share viable solutions.

The second milestone of our journey to more sustainable supply chains was the Middle East & Africa Chapter in Dubai, UAE on 5 December 2023.

Regional Partnership: Pioneering a Greener Future with Dubai South

 Dubai South has been at the forefront of a remarkable sustainability journey, marked by significant achievements in various sustainability practices. From diverting solid waste from landfills to pioneering renewable energy projects and implementing energy-efficient solutions, the company’s commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with the government's long-term vision. Together, we look forward to advancing sustainable practices and promoting a greener future.

Zones Experience

Four interactive zones introduced key logistics related sustainability topics with deep-dive masterclasses. Delegates had the chance to explore the latest research, standards, and regulations and the full range of decarbonization levers. Other key topics focused on were the migration to circular supply chains, harnessing the power of a digitalized world, and the impacts of the new energy and mobility landscape.

Mohsen Ahmad - Dubai South

Mohsen Ahmad oversees Dubai South’s entire Logistics District as its chief executive officer. Having set up its free zone and established the Dubai Logistics Corridor, which connects Jebel Ali Port with Al Maktoum International Airport via a single, custom-bonded zone, Mohsen leads the overall execution of the district’s operations, manages its financial planning, and is responsible for setting the district’s strategic directions and goals. He was also instrumental in laying the groundwork for future developments to ensure the district’s sustainable growth.

Anticipating the rapid growth of e-commerce and witnessing the growing number of international and regional movers in Dubai, Mohsen championed the development of EZDubai, a purpose built e-commerce hub that supports the growth of the sector through state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure within the Logistics District. Additionally, as an industry veteran, he played an instrumental role in developing Dubai’s overall e-commerce strategy to consolidate the emirate’s position as a hub for global e-commerce.  

Mohsen joined Dubai South in 2008 following more than twelve years’ experience in the supply chains and logistics sector, having held management posts at Al Futtaim Logistics and tenure as head of inbound logistics at Dubai Aluminum Company (DUBAL).

He had set his sights early on a career in supply chain and logistics, with a bachelor’s degree in logistics and transportation from the University of Tennessee, USA and a Master of Science in logistics and supply chain management from Cranfield University School of Management, United Kingdom. 

He is currently a fellow member and was previously the secretary general of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation (CILT), UAE.

Tariq Alfalahi - DHL

Tariq Al Falahi is the Chief Executive Officer of RailDirect, a seasoned executive with over two decades of experience, and brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership in managing high-profile government projects in the UAE.

In his current role, Tariq focuses on leading the development of the company’s long and short-term strategies, overseeing and managing overall operations, and fostering stakeholder engagement to drive long-term revenue growth. Beyond this, Tariq plays a pivotal role in achieving RailDirect’s vision of offering a reliable and sustainable cross-border freight solution.

Prior to RailDirect, Tariq served as the Commercial Director at Etihad Rail, where he was responsible for implementing commercial strategies aligning with the company’s business goals, identifying opportunities for growth, and ensuring that stakeholder and customer needs are met.

Over the course of his career, Tariq spent more than 10 years at the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), formerly the Department of Transport (DoT). During his time there, Tariq was part of the Freight Planning and Strategy Division where he developed the Abu Dhabi Freight Master plan for regulations and policies relating to freight transport, established and managed the Abu Dhabi Logistics Committee, and oversaw the development of the Abu Dhabi Capital Plan. Following DoT’s transition to DMT, he joined the Developers Affairs and Real Estate Promotion Division where he led ESCROW account digitization and legislation development and enhanced collaboration with private sector leaders to cultivate real estate growth.

Tariq holds a Bachelor of Science in Operations Management from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Operations Management.

Group Chief Operating Officer, Digital Technology - DP World

Mike Bhaskaran is the Group Chief Operating Officer, Digital Technology for DP World. He is responsible for driving the digital transformation of all parts of our value chain globally and operates all aspects of our technology presence, driving global business process improvement and systems implementation.

Mike has valuable experience in Blockchain, e-commerce technology, and driving innovative digital capabilities in complex supply chains at scale. Mike started his career within Engineering before moving into Distribution Operations and Supply Chain at Dell Computer Corporation. Prior to joining DP World, Mike was the Chief Supply Chain Officer at Staples Inc.

Before that he worked various other global organizations including Amazon, The Gap Inc, Starbucks Corporation and Beyond the Rack Inc, where he was responsible for all technology infrastructure and software development efforts.

Mike has a Masters in Industrial Technology & Engineering from Utah State University in the USA and an MBA from Krannert Graduate School of Management at Purdue University in the USA. 

Institute Director Metabolic and Strategic Advisor Circularise - Metabolic & Circularise

Phil Brown is the Director of the Metabolic Research Institute the non-profit, research entity of Metabolic. Metabolic is an impact-driven organisation whereby Phil's role is on the one hand to strategically shepherd Metabolic’s research program along an impact-driven theory of change. And, on the other to foster strategic partnerships with research partners and funders to research systemic transition pathways. The aim is to accelerate large-scale holistic innovation to transition global ecosystem’s to sustainable practices. Phil has been the Vice President of Business Development and Strategy at Circularise and remains a strategic advisor. Whereby he supports Circularise’s partners to integrate circular oriented innovation strategies and helped to translate blockchain capabilities into decision-making processes for developing Digital Product Passports (DPPs). Phil holds a PhD in Collaborative Circular Oriented Innovation from Delft University of Technology and has previously held multiple positions focused on Circular Economy Innovation. Phil’s key areas of interest and expertise include circular economy, collaborative innovation networks, Circular Design and Business Model strategies, supply chain management, and digital transition & solutions.

SVP and Chief Sustainability Officer - Cisco

In 2022, Mary de Wysocki was named the first-ever Chief Sustainability Officer of Cisco. In this role, she leads the company’s sustainability strategy; oversees its progress toward public environmental goals; and helps Cisco drive long-term value for the business, its value chain, and the planet. With nearly twenty years of experience leading various corporate social responsibility (CSR), education, and sustainability initiatives at Cisco, Mary plays an integral role in executing the company's purpose to Power an Inclusive Future for All. She draws on her diverse background in legal training, strategic consulting, and on-the-ground program management to help Cisco invest in impact-driven programs that enable social change and reimagine how technology and sustainability interact with the corporate world. Mary is also a Trustee of the Cisco Foundation and Harambeans, a member of the World Economic Forum, and a Board Member and Vice Chair of MIND Research.

Executive Director of Green Ethics FZ LLC and Technical Director of CPA - Green Ethics FZ LLC & CPA

Sara Jackson, a dual national of the UK and South Africa, has worked in various roles for Nestlé SA for 3 decades, 2 of which were based in the GCC. Her experience includes senior business and executive leadership roles in regions across Africa, Middle East and Asia. During this time, she was instrumental in leading and supporting greenfield projects including establishing manufacturing facilities in new markets, business restructuring, new market entries and the integration of a major acquisition. 

On leaving the corporate world in 2019, Sara established her own consultancy, Green Ethics FZ LLC, and is now managing the CIRCLE Coalition, a public private partnership, focused on developing a closed loop economic model for recycling post-consumer packaging waste. Recently licensed as the Circular Packaging Association, the CIRCLE Coalition, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, comprises multinational and regional brand owners including Unilever, Nestlé, Pepsico, Coca-Cola Company, Procter & Gamble, and the Agthia Group as well as the Gulf Bottled Water Association. The petrochemical and packaging industry is represented by Dow, BASF, Borouge and Tetra Pak, the Gulf Petrochemical and Chemical Association as well as the hospitality and retail sector represented by Majid Al Futtaim and Emirates Fast Foods. Participating NGO’s include Emirates Nature – WWF. The work of the CIRCLE Coalition includes initiatives to support the development of the Circular Economy in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Sara has since been appointed to the Policy Committee of the Circular Economy Council in the UAE. She has participated in several initiatives, together with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technologies to define policies to support the development of the Circular Economy in the UAE. In Saudi Arabia, Sara has supported the establishment of the KSA Packaging Working Group under the Federation of Saudi Chambers and is engaged in developing initiatives between the National Centre of Waste Management and leading Saudi industry leaders. 

Sara is a qualified ORSC practitioner and has completed the Certificate Courses in Circular Economy from the Technical University of Delft and the University of Cambridge Judge Business School. 

VP Cargo Customer Experience - Qatar Airways

Faisal Karamat is part of the leadership team at Qatar Airways and heads six departments at the cargo division of the airline - global customer service, claims, business intelligence, automation, CRM and e-initiatives.

He is responsible for defining the overall channel distribution strategy and driving innovation within Qatar Airways Cargo by digitalising the entire customer journey, both for internal and external customers. Faisal is also a key participant in the sustainability initiatives within Qatar Airways Cargo and contributes to the carrier’s sustainability programme, WeQare – built on the four core pillars of culture, economy, environment and society.

With more than 17 years of industry experience, he has a proven track record of developing the potential of diverse teams, strategic planning, business development and high impact communication strategies. He is deeply committed to serving others through collaborative partnerships and a shared vision of continuous innovation.

He started his career at Accenture with a focus on digitalising the postal services for Canada Post. Then moved on to Blackberry and Samuel Son & Co, for over 10 years in total where he took on the roles of establishing a Centre of Excellence (COE) around customer experience and analytics. This finally led to him joining the Qatar Airways Group back in 2016 where he led the CRM department for personalising the experience of the passengers as they progress on their travel experience. Since 2018, he has been part of Qatar Airways Cargo where he heads the Customer Experience department.

Faisal is a Canadian national and holds a Degree in Computer Science. He is a proud father to four daughters.

Managing Director for Global Sustainability - Google

Justin is the Managing Director for Global Sustainability at Google Cloud. He leads Google Cloud’s portfolio of sustainability solutions and helps customers drive business and sustainability goals through technology. Justin joined Google after 14 years as a Managing Director at Accenture where he was a founder of their commercial sustainability services in 2008 working for companies like. Unilever, GSK, Vodafone, Barclays, Anglo American and Centrica. He has spent 25 years in corporate sustainability including 22 years in strategy consulting focused on sustainability as a driver of growth and business transformation. He is a board advisor to the Centre for Climate Finance & Investment and Drift Energy and a non-executive of the UK National Parks partnership. He is a sailor, boxer, clean tech investor and lives in the UK with his wife and three daughters.

Global Head, Logistics Sustainability - Schneider Electric

Marcus LeMaster is a senior supply chain professional with over 30 years of global, cross-functional leadership experience spanning both supply chain and technology.  Marcus is in the global logistics transformation organization at Schneider Electric and leads the development and delivery of the company’s logistics sustainability strategy, with a primary focus on decarbonization of the company’s global freight transportation.

Marcus joined Schneider Electric in 2014 and is based in Singapore.  He has an educational background in Economics, IT, and Supply Chain with an MSc in Logistics & Supply Chain Management from Cranfield University in the UK.  He holds a chartered Professional Logistician designation from The Logistic Institute Canada.

VP Sustainability - Formula E

Julia Pallé is a leading expert on sustainability in motorsport and the international elite sport industry. As Sustainability Director at the world’s first all-electric motor racing series, FormulaE, Julia certified the ABB FIA­ Formula E World Championship net zero carbon since inception, the first sport in the world to achieve the standard. While developing and implementing the sustainability strategy at Formula E, Julia has overseen a number of significant achievements that establishes FormulaE’s credentials as a leader of sustainability in elite sport. 

 

Widely recognised as a leader in sustainability in global sport, Julia is a regular speaker at major events and conferences including COP26, Bloomberg, Sport Positive Summit, and FIA Smart Cities. Her industry roles include President of Sports and Sustainability international (SandSI), an international association of sustainable experts working to broadening and harmonising the international sport and sustainability movement. Before joining FormulaE and defining the sustainability strategy, Julia was sustainability executive at Michelin Motorsport. Her primary area of research has focused on Business & Sustainability, Change Management and Project Management especially in Motorsport.

Jeffery Sternberg - Technical Director, Sustainability

Jeff is a Technical Director, Sustainability in Google Cloud’s Office of the CTO, where he guides technology innovation to accelerate sustainability impact.  In this role, he collaborates with technology leaders in Google’s most strategic customers to develop high impact emerging sustainability projects, including approaches to ESG transformation and climate risk and resilience. At Google, Jeff has also explored emerging themes in technology, including the democratization of advanced data analysis with data science tools and the rise of machine learning operations platforms. Jeff’s essays on technology have been published in TechCrunch and Forbes.

Previously, Jeff was Senior Vice President, Data Science Engineering at Blackstone, an alternate asset manager. In this role, he helped launch the firm’s data science practice for investment analysis and portfolio company enablement across private equity and real estate. As a member of Blackstone’s technology leadership team, he was instrumental in the firm’s public cloud adoption, establishing cloud-native data engineering, analytics, and visualization programs. Before Blackstone, Jeff was Director of Data Engineering at Ipreo, a financial technology company, VP Technology at Observer Media, a publisher, and CTO of an early-stage retail data analytics startup. Before these roles, Jeff was Chief Data Scientist at S&P Global, where he founded the company's first data science team. Jeff was a core member of the Capital IQ technology leadership team pre-acquisition by S&P, and led the global content engineering team. 

Jeff received a bachelor degree in Biology at the University of Virginia.

Africa's Youngest Climate Finance & Health Champion

Ellyanne Wanjiku Chlystun is Africa's Youngest Climate Finance & Health Champion * Zero Malaria Ambassador at 13, has been the catalyst for over 1.3 million trees being planted so far, earning her Kenya's prestigious Eco-Warrior Award, the Youngest Paul Harris Fellow, nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize 2023.

Ellyanne is also a published author of 3 books, keen on innovation and currently writing her 4th book on Artificial Intelligence & Technology for Good. Inspired by Wangari Maathai, Ellyanne addresses climate change's impact on vulnerable communities and young people through positive action.

In June 2023 Ellyanne presented Emmanuel Macron with the New Global Financial Pact Children's Declaration & on the sidelines of the Africa Climate Summit, Ellyanne led a committee of 17 children from around the world to organise the 1st Ever Child-Led Global Children Climate Summit tapping into own savings and friends. In 2023 she became a Zero Malaria Ambassador, highlighting climate change's role in malaria challenges, starring in an international campaign with fellow Zero Malaria Ambassador David Beckham. As the co-founder and CEO of Children With Nature (CWN), Ellyanne promotes connecting children with the natural world. 

Her advocacy extends globally, influencing policymakers and leaders, driving a paradigm shift for a more sustainable and equitable world.

Vice President and Global Head of Corporate Responsibility

With nearly three decades of experience in corporate citizenship and sustainability, Alyson Genovese leads S&P Global’s global corporate responsibility strategy and implementation, including the company’s ESG approach, performance, reporting and enterprise-wide integration.

Alyson and her team also manage S&P Global’s work with nonprofit and corporate responsibility partners, employee engagement programs, and overall philanthropic strategy. Prior to joining S&P Global, Alyson was the head of North America for the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), an independent organization providing the world’s most widely used standards for sustainability management, tracking and disclosure.

Alyson was the principal owner of Cause Solutions, a strategic advisory group serving business and nonprofit organizations in program design & implementation, corporate responsibility and stakeholder engagement. She built her experience in community investment, cause branding, and stakeholder communications through earlier roles at Comcast, Cone Communications, Points of Light Foundation and more.

Alyson holds an MBA from the University of New Hampshire and a graduate certificate in nonprofit & public administration from George Mason University. She received her bachelor’s degree from Fairfield University. When not working, she can be found chasing her two teenage daughters around Utah’s Wasatch Mountains.

Chief Commercial Officer - DHL

Since February 2018 Katja Busch has been responsible for the Sales Organization “DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation” as Chief Commercial Officer & Head of CSI at DHL Group. From January 2013 – January 2018 Katja Busch was Chief Sales Officer (CSO) DHL eCommerce Germany. Prior to this she was Divisional Board Member for DHL eCommerce for over six years in the Mail division at DHL AG responsible for domestic sales including customer service for eCommerce.

Appointed CSO DHL eCommerce Germany in 2013, Busch assumed overall responsibility for customer service for both Mail and Parcel business units, including 22 call centers operated by DHL Customer Service GmbH. From March 2014 – January 2018 she headed international customer service for the Group’s eCommerce division. In August 2016 she also assumed responsibility for the newly created Global eCom* Key Account Management unit.

Chief Executive Officer Middle East & Africa - DHL Global Forwarding

Since June 2017 Amadou Diallo is CEO of DHL Global Forwarding Middle East & Africa based in Dubai.

He is the founder of Saloodo. He was previously CEO DHL Freight, CEO DHL Global Forwarding Africa & South Asia Pacific and prior to this CFO of Deutsche Post DHL Logistics Division as well as Managing Director for the integration of Exel and DHL.

Mr. Diallo has over 30 years of experience in the tourism, banking, express and logistics industries.

He is Senegalese and fluent in several languages including English, German, French, Spanish, Fulani and Wolof.

Mr. Diallo holds an MBA in International Business and volunteers as Chairman of Gesundes Afrika, member of the Board of Directors of Welthungerhilfe, Global Business School Network and Africa Tech Festival amongst others.

SVP Strategy & Operations Programs - Deutsche Post DHL

Dr. Andreas Mündel is SVP of Group Strategy and responsible for strategic projects in the area of production. This includes the Clean OPS teams, the lead of the Sustainable Fuel project, the Center of Excellence Automation of Operations, the Group OHS team and Corporate Patent Management. In addition, Mr. Mündel coordinates the agenda of the Operations Board, which includes the divisional board members for Operations in addition to the CEO.

 

Dr. Andreas Mündel has been in various strategic roles in the consulting and logistics industry for 20 years. After studying physics, he initially worked for the management consultancy McKinsey and moved to Deutsche Post DHL in 2004 as Head of Strategy of DHL Express Europe.

SVP Global Environment, Social & Governance - DHL

Katharina is a studied psychologist who started her work life with the sensor solutions pioneer SICK AG gaining first experience in logistics related fields with a strong innovation focus. She joined global player DHL Group in 2006 as a management consultant and took over global responsibility for the environmental protection program in 2010. Since then, she held various management positions in the Group, most recently as SVP Global Operations in the DHL Supply Chain Division. Since January 2023, she is shaping the sustainability agenda as SVP, Global Environment, Social & Governance (ESG) reporting to DHL Supply Chain’s CEO. She’s passionate about bringing positive change for people and the planet.

Vice President, Global Head of Innovation & Trend Research - DHl Customer Solutions & Innovation

As Vice President, Head of Innovation & Trend Research for DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation (CSI), Dr. Klaus Dohrmann is responsible for positioning DHL as the thought leader in the logistics industry and beyond as well as delivering customer-centric innovation. This includes the publication of THE Logistics Trend Radar , an acclaimed benchmark for strategy and innovation in the logistics industry, as well as deep-dive Trend Reports. In an end-to-end approach his global team also drives innovation from customer engagements, technology scouting, and research to proof of concepts and commercial solutions. His area of responsibility also includes the DHL SmartSolutions IOT team providing global IoT solutions for the purpose of supply chain visibility, operational excellence, customer experience, and employee safety. 

Head of Innovation MEA - DHL

With over 25 years of experience (including 20 with DHL) in the airline and logistics industries, across 3 continents, Irina knows what it takes to keep things moving.  She heads up the DHL Innovation Center for the Middle East and Africa Region, a purpose-built platform to engage customers, start-ups, and industries on the future of logistics.

She is passionate about putting Sustainability on the agenda of DHL customers and partners and working together on innovative solutions to make supply chains greener. 

Irina holds a Masters of Business Administration Degree from Lancaster University, UK.

She has been calling Dubai home for the last 9 years; a mother of two Dubai-born ‘treasures’, her family embodies the vibrant multicultural tapestry that is the essence of the UAE.

This latest chapter builds on the success of the global summit, a three-day summit in April 2023 that delivered exceptional keynote speeches, highlighting broad perspectives, as well as actionable insights.

Delegates were able to explore interactive themed zones designed to intrigue, inspire fresh thinking, educate, and learn about the latest cross-industry solutions and innovations in sustainable logistics.

 A range of masterclasses provided deep-dive access to topics in detail, while networking opportunities forged valuable multi-sector multi industry connections and collaborations.

A hands-on opportunity to share ideas and experiences, shape next steps, and build more sustainable business strategies.
