DHL EXPRESS INTRODUCES FIRST AI SORTING ROBOT IN SOUTH KOREA

Press Release: Seoul, Jul 21, 2021

  • Deployed at Gangbuk Service Center which processes the largest small parcels volume within its network in the nation
  • Capable of sorting over 1,000 small parcels per hour, increasing efficiency by 41% and significantly freeing up workers’ time

As the first international express service provider in South Korea, DHL Express has successfully introduced sortation robot at its Gangbuk Service Center. Piloted in in early July, the sorting robot officially started its operation on 20th of July.

The robot DHL Express Korea deployed is a robotic arm flyer sorter made by Dorabot, an AI-powered robotic solution provider for logistics. The robotic arm leverages artificial intelligence to quickly sort documents and small parcels into separate delivery bins and is capable of sorting over 1,000 small parcels per hour – increasing efficiency by 41%. While minimizing human interaction which is crucial for employee safety during COVID-19, the robotic flyer sorter is also expected to sort flyers to route level with 99% accuracy.

"We are the first player in the field to deploy the robotic flyer sorter, and I think it shows that we are taking the lead to digitize our operations and leverage technology to support our employees, in order to better serve our customers," said ByungKoo Han, Country Manager of DHL Express Korea. "We are handling record high shipment volume due to the current e-commerce boom, and robotics will ease our staff's work burden as well as improve productivity. We will keep accelerate innovation, automation, and digital transformation at the workplace," he added.

After a thorough examination of cases in DHL Express USA and Singapore, DHL Express Korea decided to implement the robotic arm flyer sorter at its Gangbuk Service Center, which processes the most small-sized parcels in its local network. DHL Express Korea plans to gradually introduce the robotic sorter system to other facilities in the country as well.

The implementation of the robot is part of Deutsche Post DHL Group's on-going digitalization effort. In 2019, Deutsche Post DHL Group announced to step up digital transformation for all of the Group's business divisions, and would spend around EUR 2 billion on digitalization . The digitalization investment is expected to lead to yearly run rate benefits of at least EUR 1.5 billion by 2025.
