DHL EXPRESS INTRODUCES 19 ELECTRIC TRUCKS IN JAPAN TO REDUCE CARBON EMISSIONS
Press Release: Tokyo Japan, June 27, 2023
DHL Express, the world’s leading international express service provider, has announced the introduction of 19 electric trucks in 2023 as part of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions in its Japan operations. The fleet to be introduced are 18 Hino Dutro Z EV, a light commercial EV truck made in Japan, and one eCanter made by Mitsubishi Fuso. As a first step in 2023, the four Hino Dutro Z EV will be used for pickup and delivery operations in the Chiyoda, Shibuya, and Taito wards of Tokyo.
Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan said, “Our efforts to tackle climate change never stop. To fulfill our responsibility as a global logistics industry leader, we will continue to reduce carbon emissions by further proceeding with the green initiatives, such as this.”
In Japan, DHL Express started the shift to EVs in 2014 for delivery vehicles. Currently, the business is operating an electric vehicle fleet comprising five electric vans, 10 three-ton electric trucks, three electric tricycles, and 10 electric bikes. The company is also working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by installing renewable energy facilities at the Tokyo Distribution Center, a large-scale logistics facility in Shinkiba, Tokyo.
Deutsche Post DHL Group aims for net-zero emissions logistics by 2050, and announced a €7 billion investment in clean operations, including the electrification of 60% of its last-mile delivery fleet by 2030. Besides the addition of electric vehicles and the building of carbon-neutral facilities worldwide, DHL Express also rolled out GoGreen Plus, the industry's first service that enables carbon emissions reduction (‘inset’) through sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This is attractive to shippers as it allows them to reduce their Scope 3 emissions, and the service was launched in Japan since 1 May 2023.
