DHL EXPRESS LAUNCHES FULL GOGREEN PLUS SERVICE IN JAPAN: FIRST INTERNATIONAL EXPRESS SHIPPING SERVICE THAT REDUCES CO2 EMISSIONS USING SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL

Press Release: Tokyo Japan, July 12, 2023

DHL Group aims net-zero emissions by 2050
  • Allows shippers to reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions
  • Customized carbon reduction tailored to customer targets, with availability of certificates and reporting tools

DHL Express, the world’s leading international express service provider, today announced the launch of GoGreen Plus service in Japan. This is the industry’s first service that allows customers to reduce (‘inset’) the carbon emissions of their shipments, with the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

The key to reducing emissions is the SAF book-and-claim method integrated into the service. DHL Express announced last year one of the industry's largest SAF contracts with bp and Neste with over 800 million liters until 2026. Through the GoGreen Plus service, customers in Japan can utilize SAF for the shipments they send.

The purchase and use of SAF under GoGreen Plus reduces emissions within the logistics sector itself (‘carbon insetting’) and thereby can be used for DHL customers’ emissions reporting, bringing down Scope 3 emissions. Scope 3 emissions refers to the indirect greenhouse gas emissions in a company’s downstream value chain (transport and distribution).

Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan said, “SAF is currently the primary route to reducing carbon emissions in aviation, so this is the most effective way to help our customers make their own supply chains more sustainable. We are delighted that our new GoGreen Plus can now be fully leveraged by customers to enable them to bring down their Scope 3 emissions”.

The service lineup announced today includes GoGreen Plus - Basic, and GoGreen Plus - Carbon Reduced, allowing customers to choose their desired level of emissions reduction. Customers can also request for certificates and/or a carbon footprint report to verify the degree of their emissions reductions. The GoGreen Plus option on MyDHL+ remains available to shippers.

Under Mission 2050, which aims to achieve net-zero logistics-related emissions by 2050, DHL Express has been working towards electrifying its delivery vehicles worldwide, using SAF for air transportation, and promoting carbon neutrality in its facilities. GoGreen Plus will contribute to achieving two of these targets: converting 30% of all air transportation fuel to SAF by 2030 and offering a green alternative for all products and services across all divisions.

In Japan, DHL Express started the shift to EVs in 2014 for delivery vehicles. Currently, the business is operating 19 electric vehicle fleet comprising five electric vans, 10 three-ton electric trucks, 4 one-ton electric trucks, three electric tricycles, and 10 electric bikes.  The company is also working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by installing renewable energy facilities at the Tokyo Distribution Center, a large-scale logistics facility in Shinkiba, Tokyo.
