a discussion on msme e-commerce trends and opportunities in sri lanka

The global marketplace is a vast and dynamic arena, brimming with opportunities for businesses of all sizes. For Sri Lankan Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), this presents a chance to boost profits and achieve significant growth. E-commerce, with its power to transcend geographical boundaries, is key to unlocking that potential. By embracing digital tools and the right strategies, Sri Lankan MSMEs can reach customers worldwide and establish themselves as formidable players in international trade.

Current state of MSME e-commerce and exporting in Sri Lanka

Despite the promising outlook, e-commerce engagement among Sri Lankan MSMEs remains relatively low. Many micro and small firms still operate offline, and those that do utilize e-commerce tend to rely on social media as their primary sales channel. This reliance limits reach and potential for growth. However, a recent study conducted under the eTrade Alliance in collaboration with DHL Express Sri Lanka’s GoTrade Initiative indicates a strong correlation between e-commerce adoption and export activities. This study, supported by USAID and aimed at promoting cross-border e-commerce to MSMEs in Sri Lanka, surveyed 633 businesses across the country.

Notably, there is a dominant trend of marketplace sellers exhibiting higher export rates – while less than 10% of traditional micro, small, and medium-sized businesses export, this figure jumps significantly when examining firms that utilize online marketplaces: 43% for micro firms, 50% for small firms, and 31% for medium firms. These figures demonstrate the effectiveness of leveraging online platforms – like Kapruka, Daraz, and Takas – to effectively access international markets.

Problems faced by Sri Lankan exporters in international markets

While opportunities in international e-commerce are immense, Sri Lankan MSMEs face various challenges in expanding globally. These include:

  • Lack of in-house resources and capabilities: Many MSMEs have limited staff and may not have dedicated personnel with the expertise to manage the operational complexities of exporting, such as coordinating international shipping, managing warehousing and fulfillment, and handling returns.
  • Import restrictions and regulatory hurdles: Obtaining necessary licenses and navigating import restrictions in different countries can be a complex and time-consuming process. MSMEs often face challenges in understanding and complying with varying regulations across different target markets.
  • Customs clearance, foreign currency acquisition, and logistics: These processes can be particularly challenging for MSMEs due to limited experience and resources. Delays in customs clearance, difficulties in acquiring foreign currency for international payments, and logistical complexities like choosing the right shipping methods and managing delivery timelines can lead to increased costs and operational inefficiencies.
  • Lack of trained staff and capital: MSMEs often struggle to find and retain employees with the necessary skills for international trade, such as knowledge of foreign languages, cultural sensitivity, and expertise in digital marketing for international audiences. Limited access to capital can also hinder investment in training existing staff or hiring new personnel with specialized knowledge. This financial constraint can further limit their ability to invest in technology upgrades and marketing campaigns necessary for international expansion.
  • Adapting to international markets: Entering new markets requires careful consideration of cultural nuances, consumer preferences, and local market dynamics. MSMEs need to adapt their marketing messages, product offerings, and pricing strategies to effectively resonate with international customer segments and compete in foreign markets. This includes understanding local preferences for product features, pricing sensitivities, and preferred communication channels.

Overcoming these challenges is essential for Sri Lankan MSMEs to successfully leverage e-commerce and achieve sustainable growth in the global marketplace.

Expanding your MSME business globally with e-commerce and export strategies

To overcome the challenges outlined above and effectively tap into the potential of international exports, Sri Lankan MSMEs need to adopt a strategic approach when it comes to building a business around e-commerce. This involves developing a comprehensive digital strategy, understanding the global e-commerce landscape, optimizing online presence, and streamlining operations.

Become an e-commerce expert

  • Master digital marketing: Don't just have a website – make it work for you. Invest time in learning SEO, social media marketing, and online advertising to drive traffic and generate leads. Explore platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and even TikTok to reach younger demographics and build brand awareness.
  • Understand international trade: Familiarize yourself with the legal and logistical aspects of exporting from Sri Lanka. This includes customs regulations, import restrictions in your target markets, and documentation requirements. Consider partnering with experienced export consultants or leveraging resources from organizations like the Export Development Board (EDB) to navigate these complexities.
  • Secure your transactions: Prioritize online security. Choose reputable payment gateways that offer robust fraud protection and comply with international standards. Ensure your website has SSL certification to protect customer data and build trust.

Optimize your online presence

  • Craft a captivating online store: Your website is your digital storefront. Make it visually appealing, easy to navigate, and informative. Use high-quality images of your products, write compelling descriptions, and offer multiple language options to cater to a global audience.
  • Go mobile: Ensure your website is mobile-friendly. A significant portion of online traffic comes from mobile devices, so optimize your e-commerce site for seamless browsing and purchasing on smartphones and tablets.
  • Speed matters: Website speed is crucial for user experience and search engine rankings. Optimize your website's performance to ensure fast loading times, especially for users with varying internet speeds in different countries.

Target your ideal customer

  • Know your audience: Conduct thorough market research to identify your target customer segments in specific countries. Understand their needs, preferences, and cultural nuances to tailor your marketing messages and product offerings effectively.
  • Leverage analytics: Utilize analytics tools like Google Analytics to track website traffic, customer behavior, and sales data. This data provides valuable insights into what's working and what's not, allowing you to refine your strategies and maximize conversions.

Streamline logistics and fulfillment:

  • Partner with reliable shipping providers: Efficient and cost-effective shipping is crucial for international e-commerce. Partner with reputable logistics providers like DHL Express, who offer a wide range of services, competitive rates, and expertise in customs procedures.
  • Explore fulfillment options: Consider different fulfillment solutions, such as dropshipping or utilizing fulfillment centers in target markets, to optimize delivery times and reduce shipping costs. This is particularly important for perishable goods or products with specific storage requirements.

Build trust and credibility

  • Showcase social proof: Display customer testimonials, product reviews, and any relevant certifications or awards on your website. This builds trust and credibility with potential customers who may be hesitant to purchase from an unfamiliar brand.
  • Offer secure payment options: Provide a variety of secure payment options to cater to different customer preferences. Clearly display security badges and ensure your checkout process is user-friendly and secure.
  • Provide excellent customer support: Offer prompt and helpful customer support in multiple languages. Address queries, resolve issues efficiently, and consider offering live chat support for immediate assistance.

Embrace continuous learning

  • Stay informed: The world of e-commerce is constantly evolving. Stay up-to-date with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices by attending industry events, reading industry publications, and engaging in online forums.
  • Network and learn: Connect with other e-commerce businesses, both in Sri Lanka and internationally, to share knowledge, learn from their experiences, and stay ahead of the curve.
